Leaky Tranny

As I said my t&c is leaking tranny fluid. When it leaks down to far of course it doesn't shift well. I'm hoping to get another 6 months or so out of it before I trade it in, it has 142,000 miles on it. Anybody had the same problem? Anybody tried any of the "stopleaks"? BTW it still runs great, my wife and I just took it to Illinois this weekend pulling a little flatbed trailer to pick up a golf cart

Cooler line?

Are you saying that it just may be a loose connection in the lines at the transmission? If that's the case I will try to fix it.

My 95 (2nd gen) began leaking tranny fluid at about 95K. It leaked especially when it was warm. I had never changed the fluid prior to this time. I began adding ATF+3 on a regular basis, and tried stop leak. The stop leak did not work for me. Finally, at 129,000 miles, I had a complete seal job done, which cost about $1,000, including a front transmission mount. I got another 40,000 miles out of it, which works out to 2.5 cents per mile. For another $300 I could have had a complete overhaul, and looking back, I wish I had. It would have saved me money, as I had to replace it due to a bad torque converter.

My point is if you find you have to have the transmission re-sealed, and they offer to overhaul for a few hundred more, go for it if you want to hold on to the vehicle. It could save you money.

I'm going to check the lines first of all. I'm hoping to get another 6-12 months out of this before I get another van. So what do you guys think? Will you guys buy another Chrysler? Seems like the Foreign vans have less problems?

They just have brainwashed cutomers. I have a friend who has a camry. He has spent literally a couple thousand fixing oil leaks. But he and his wife are convinced it's the greatest thing ever of course they pour over CR regularly. When I had my 450+ lb father in law in the front seat of my old 93 T&C I hit a bump and of course the right front suspension was already bottomed so the strut mount broke. My brother told me what a piece of s&^t my Chrysler was because his Lexus would NEVER do THAT. Well not 2 weeks later he had to hve 2 broken strut mounts replaced. I could go on here but it would not be good to get me started. CR is not worth wiping your behind with they are so bigoted. Ever wonder why they ALWAYS list Kenmore appliances tops? Even though they are made by Whirlpool and many other identical appliances exist with Whirpool's own name and many other labels? Well one of the top brass at CR is a former big shot from Sears THAT's why. Oh no they're impartial yeah RIGHT and I'm Tom Selleck.

If you mean that you'd like an Odyssey with power sliding doors that constantly burn out or a transmission that fails inside of 30,000 miles, or perhaps a Sienna with run-flat tires you have to replace at 20,000; then yes the foreign vans have less problems.

Seriously, I have two Chrysler minivans and they probably won't be my last. Even if my next car isn't a minivan... it'll probably still be a Chrysler.

I'm better now.

You guys are an inspiration. I really didn't know that the foreign vans had much in the way of problems. So they all do........well thats...........comforting I guess. I was never a big minivan fan, but I always tell people that I really can't think of a more versatile vehicle. My wife loves hers and we've done a lot with it. How many miles do you hear of the 3.3 going? Also what about the 3.8?

The 3.3/3.8 are basically the same engine. Both are old-fashioned pushrod engines with timing chains that will usually last upwards of 200,000 miles easily. They're fairly low compression engines compared to say, the 3.0 in older minivans. If you'd like some in-depth information on the 3.3/3.8 family, then check here at Allpar.

As far as reliability problems go, every car has something. It's just in consumer perception. If you have a Honda and you need to have a cam sensor replaced, you're much more likely to think it's no big deal; mainly because it's a Honda and it's supposed to be reliable. But if a cam sensor were to go out on a Chrysler or a GM, people would think it's just a sign of how unreliable those makes are.

You want info on the foreign's, go to odyclub.com and you will see the problems they have when you start digging. The worst I read was one ody tranny blowing so bad it locked up the front end at freeway speeds at night with the fellows family inside and cars started whizzing past on either side to keep from hitting them. How is that for a horror story third hand.

That is precisely why Chrysler trannies have the "limp home mode" which will keep the transmission in 2nd gear if anything bad happens. I'm surprised Honda didn't integrate such a feature into their transmissions as well.

They did. ALL electronc units have a limp in mode. the poor slob who had that particular failure had a catastrophic lock up failure. The Honda trans fails because of a lack of lubrication to the main or Sun shaft causing the unit to lock up sometimes. The same thing can and does happen when the 41te's differential pin comes out.
