Gasket Sealer vs Gasket Maker

This is a follow on question to my thread I started on replacing timing chain on my Van. When reinstalling the timing chain cover, the factory service manual says in bold letters DO NOT USE GASKET SEALER. First question, is there a difference between sealer and maker? The bigger question is what to use to hold the gasket in place while trying to reinstall the timing chain cover. The manual says to adhere the gasket to the timing chain cover, but I find this is direct conflict with the warning of not to use sealer. Any advice here?

Gasket sealer is just that, it seals the gasket to a component. The problem with this is that some gasket sealers can build up in spots when put on and it can cause gaps and allow the gasket to leak there.
I have used "Gasket Tack" which is a liquid and goes on very thin. The best I use is CLEAN wheel bearing grease. I put a dab on corner areas and then a dab between the bolt holes. I am talking about on many different gasket applications. Put it on kind of thin and it will hold a gasket in place , even tuning the part upside down. When PROPER TORQUE is applied, the thin film of grease will squeeze out and allow proper seating of the gasket.
Gasket sealers can build up or ball up if allowed to dry before the gasket is put on. Remember good old INDIAN HEAD GASKET CEMENT.

It has been awhile since I have done that job on any 3.3/3.8. My memory does not register any problems like that. Do you or can you take any pictures of the area - with the cover on and with it off and post it here?

I am gonna go ask a tech at the local dealership. I really don't have the ability to put pictures on here. (Technically inept) Also, I'm not sure I can take a picture that would identify the problem. I'll follow up with what I find.

With bare metal, no gasket, it is about probably about .010 of a gap. It just doesn't look right. It may be perfectly normal, but I don't want to have to undo all of this if it is not right.
