2005 Chevrolet Avalanche - Frame Rust

A Friend had his Avalanche in for some brake work yesterday. The Shop told him the frame was badly rusted and he might get another year out of it.

Ridiculous for sure, but he isn't alone. This seems to be a common complaint per the following two sites:

Was also a problem with previous model years, reportedly.

Any of you Members here familiar with this problem or have any info to share as to what GM has done under Customer satisfaction programs or whatever. My Friend just bought a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan so is a bit strapped as to throwing $ at a rusted out Avalanche. Any info or help will be appreciated.

These trucks also had a problem with water getting into the transmission. Sounds like a good vehicle to avoid.

Nearly every Avalanche I've seen here, and there are many, has one or more of the plastic lower body panels (brush guards) missing or broken. Not sure what year the one that parks in my parking lot is, but it looks pretty ragged out. I'll take a peek underneath it today.

Personally, I'd avoid any '03-'09 GM product, just on the assumption that they were probably cutting corners to keep themselves afloat in those years. That's only speculation though. GM seems to have gotten its act back together though...rode in a 2011 Aveo yesterday. Not bad. A lot smoother and quieter, but definitely uglier inside and out, than my '12 VW Gol.
